The Man Himself: Jim Hnatiuk
Jim has extensive life experience in the management of the Hunting, Fishing, Firearms and Training sectors. In the 3 years prior to his retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces, Jim held the position of Maritime Command Chief Training Officer.. As part of his 25-year service in Combat Systems, Jim represented the Government of Canada as Quality Assurance Inspector overseeing (many aspects) in the conduct of the Prime Contractor, during the building of Canada’s City Class Destroyers. Jim built Hnatiuk’s Hunting & Fishing Limited from the ground up. After his retirement from the CAF Jim’s vision to work within the hunting industry had him establish in six short years, one of the largest sports and taxidermy centers in Nova Scotia. His unique store now stands out as a showcase and landmark in the Nova Scotia. Throughout his life, Jim had extensive experience in the hunting and fishing world. Orphaned at the age of six and taken in by the Ojibwa People in Long Lac Ontario they soon taught him the skills of hunting and trapping black bear and beaver. Later he fished for Walleye, Sturgeon and Northern Pike and during his 7 years in B.C he fished for Coho Salmon in the Straits of Juan de Fuca. Jim took top positions in Stripped Bass competitions held on Grand Lake N.S. As a NS Field Officer with the National Firearms Association, and a specialty Wildlife Instructor, for the Professional Nova Scotia Guides, Jim has enjoyed the many years of Whitetail Deer and Moose Hunting in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. He is a 41-year veteran taxidermist; his business currently does the largest amount of taxidermy in Nova Scotia. Hnatiuk’s expertise in taxidermy has been used by and continues to ship to customers in USA, England, France, Sweden, Germany and more. In April 2012, his business was awarded the NS Government contract to oversee and provide all the classroom Hunter Education courses, as well as all Non-Restricted and Restricted firearms courses for the province. As a result Hnatiuk’s Training Division was established, with its main office now in Shubenacadie NS. In August 2014, his business completed its third major expansion in six years. Hnatiuk’s Gun Range is now the first of it’s kind in the Atlantic Provinces. An indoor, fully automated, professional handgun range is now in full operation, and Jim became the President of the new Scotia Gun Club. Jim Hnatiuk has a unique ability to work with and see the best in people; he can foresee growth potential and has the professional management and leadership skills to have them become a reality. He sees his businesses as not only required to enhance our economy but equally to reflect in good light an industry that is essential to maintaining a part of Nova Scotia’s rich heritage while demonstrating a respect for our environment. Jim is also an published author! His book, “Know This: From Torment to Miracles” was recently released April of 2016. Jim Hnatiuk takes you on an astonishing true-life story of encounters few would dare to share. Encounters he knows everyone can benefit in knowing! The book can be found at Hnatiuk’s Hunting and Fishing shop in Lantz! Jim holds the position of Deacon at his church, he has been married 41 yrs. to Ellen – he is a resident of Enfield NS, has a son, daughter and four grandsons, all of whom will undoubtedly be encouraged by Jim to appreciate and respect the great outdoors, and be thankful to God for the blessings we have been afforded.
